It isn't often that you get to speed through northern New Jersey at 100 mph and stop to pull a few screeching doughnuts in the middle of the street, all while a police escort hovers nearby to make sure no one interrupts your fun.

A spokesman for the Formula One Grand Prix of America set for June 2013 has downplayed F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone's latest remarks questioning whether the event will take place as scheduled next summer in Weehawken, N.J.

Ecclestone, when asked by British broadcaster BBC last Saturday if the race will go ahead next year, said: "No. Definitely, no."

Confusingly, the 81-year-old then added: "If they can get it (the circuit) completed and confirm to us it will be done, for sure, they'll be on the calendar."

In response to Ecclestone's latest comments casting doubt on whether the track will be ready in time for its tentative date, a GP of America spokesman on Tuesday backed up recent comments from event organizers that all plans are moving ahead as expected.

As recently as June 11, reigning F1 champion Sebastian Vettel and former Grand Prix driver David Coulthard attended a promotional event where they drove in road cars around the proposed circuit layout on the streets of Weehawken and West New York.

"Nothing has changed in the last two weeks, since we hosted Sebastian Vettel and David Coulthard as the first drivers from F1 to try out the new circuit," said GP of America spokesman Alex Howe. "We continue to make significant progress toward the first race in June 2013, in all aspects."

Though construction has begun on a welcome center across from the Port Imperial ferry terminal and other preparations are ongoing, the race is awaiting official confirmation that it has been added to the Formula One schedule for next June.
